One of Chile’s most prized vineyards, Clos Quebrada de Macul, located in Alto Maipo, home of Maipo’s best viticultural areas, produces world-class Cabernet Sauvignon. The Peña family was one of the first to plant Cabernet on the region’s lower-yielding hillsides, which today is some of the most expensive fruit in the area, having amassed a history of high-scoring, memorable wines.

The Peña’s released their first vintage of Domus Aurea in 1996 after recognizing their vineyard’s remarkable quality. It quickly became one of Chile’s most sought-after Cabernets, gaining worldwide attention with consistently high scores. Jean-Pascal Lacaze, the lead winemaker since 2003, has evolved into one of Chile’s most revered winemakers by dependably producing exceptional wines with a distinct Chilean character with a bit of a French accent. This is a Very Popular Wine gaining momentum among the Best Wines in the World, and it has the scores to back it up.

Description

2020 DOMUS AUREA CABERNET SAUVIGNON MAIPO VALLEY, CHILE WINE

The Domus Aurea Cabernet hails from the winery’s 45 acre Estate Vineyards in Chile Maipo Valley region. They planted their vineyard in 1970 to 80% Cabernet Sauvignon and 20% Merlot, Cab Franc, and Petit Verdot.  Taking things to an even higher level in 2003, the Pena’s hired Winemaker Jean-Pascal Lacaze as the lead winemaker. Jean-Pascal was born in France and trained in Bordeaux, and he’s now one of Chile’s most sought after consulting winemakers.

WA94 ~ From Robert Parker’s Wine Advocate, “2020 was an even drier (and warmer) vintage, but surprisingly enough, the 2020 Domus Aurea shows less alcohol and more moderate ripeness than the 2019 vintage of this same wine. This is the archetype of a powerful, balsamic and minty Cabernet-based blend from Maipo, a wine for the long haul. It has more tannin than the 2019 I tasted next to it. 30,160 bottles produced. It was bottled in December 2021.” ROBERT PARKER WINE ADVOCATE 94 POINTS
