2018 HIGHLANDS HOWELL MOUNTAIN CABERNET SAUVIGNON RESERVE
Highlands is a project between two veterans in the industry, Paul Segas, and Dave Cofran. Paul is an experienced grape grower that sold fruit to Chateau Montelena, Robert Mondavi, and Joseph Phelps. Dave has been working as an enologist and winemaker since 1967, and in 1984 he joined Silver Oak as GM.
Tasting Notes from Winery, “Full and powerful nose and deep ruby/garnet color in this 100% Cabernet Sauvignon drives anticipation. Vibrant aromas of cherry, red berries, vanilla, and gentle oak tantalize the nose and set a chocolate, cream-like expectation on the palate. Followed with a full and lush sense of sweetness on each sip carrying blackberry and earthy, smoky notes even more cocoa cream lasting finish. Sophisticated!”
Tasting Notes from Master Sommelier, “The Highlands Reserve Howell Mountain Cabernet Sauvignon 2018 immediately shows you a little bit of its restrained youth, but all while teasing you with what is to come as it opens up in the glass… just what you would expect from a young mountain cabernet. The nose begins with black raspberries, dried mushrooms, white flowers, earthy minerals, cocoa powder, and vanilla hints. Then the palate has focused black currants, wild cassis, crushed rocks, satiny mountain tannins, and deep spices. The finish is concentrated, elegant, and long. Drink over the next 12 – 15 years.” KEVIN VOGT 93 POINTS
Notes from Edward, “I met Owner Paul Segas from a really good friend of mine, Winemaker Brad Smith. Personally, I’m an Old Soul, and I can hang with the best of them, however it’s hard to describe sitting down and tasting Howell Mountain Cabernet with a Pioneer of Napa Valley. I know quite a few of these Pioneers living on a Vineyard with my wife’s background- the best way to describe is like this: Have you ever watched that Movie “City Slickers” with Billy Crystal? It’s a Classic film and especially good with BBQ or Ribeye, and this Howell Mnt Cab (a perfect date-night pairing btw) nonetheless, do you remember the Cowboy Curly? His character has this true-grit, no-nonsense attitude… however very sophisticated, and a true gentleman. That’s exactly what it’s like meeting/tasting with a Pioneer of Napa Valley. Enjoying their wines, reflects the truest essence of the Earth, the terroir, the AVAs of this Valley we call Napa… when you hold this specific bottle, and notice the hand-crafted Label, please pour generous glasses for yourself, your friends and family. Because This is a Special Wine and something you have to experience, and share – it will only get better as it ages… Just Like You. We only have access to a few cases, so who wants one? ” ED STEPHANICK, CALIHIWINES 95+ POINTS
