While some wines are ready to be enjoyed nearly immediately after bottling, others can take time to fully come around and get their legs under them. History has proven when the James Joseph Reds reach a year in the bottle, magic happens and they begin to perform at such a high-level that they’re nearly unrecognizable from when they were bottled.  With that extra time in the bottle, the 2016 now pulls you in, with a dramatic and hedonistic bouquet of wild blackberries, dark chocolates, black currants, graphite and sweet vanilla.  Born from a single vineyard located at 1,100 feet elevation on Mount Veeder, the final blend on the 2016 combines Cabernet Franc, Merlot and Cabernet Sauvignon in a way that perfectly expresses the Mountains majestic terroir, with a vivid display of fine-grained tannins, focused berries, dried flowers, chocolate and stony minerality.

In wine, greatness can come from a steadfast focus on your core strengths.  With James Joseph, we’ve scaled back production by 75% in 2016, producing just four barrels of the absolute best wine possible.  The 2016 was authored by Grant Long Jr., winemaker at Witchery, Aonair and Steps, and it was kept for 21 months in oak.  Those of you who tasted any of the previous vintages of James Joseph, know exactly what to expect… $100/btl quality at a price that’s an epic value…

2016 James Joseph Kathryn’s Reserve Proprietary Red, Mount Veeder

Tasting Notes: “Deeply rich aromas of black raspberries, Bing cherries, black currants, cocoa powder, pipe tobacco and a hint of sweet  vanilla.  On the palate, layers of crushed blackberries, liquid mineral, sweet blue fruits, freshly ground coffee and oak spice all in perfect balance.  The tannins support a long, opulent finish.  Drink now or over the next 12 years.“ 100 Cases Produced

Mount Veeder is a unique place… a rare and beautiful spot where vines cling to the steep hillsides, producing tiny berries that give wines here their big, bold, brambly fruit character. Unlike any Terroir in Napa, a distinction of concentration, yet so smooth… THIS is Amazing Juice!

* Rugged mountain terrain. Extremely steep slopes, above the fog, render shallow topsoil and minimal water retention, resulting in tiny berries, with intense flavor concentration yet soft tannins.

* Unlike any Terroir in Napa. Mount Veeder is an island of ancient seabed pushed up into a mountain… It happened about 5,000,000 years ago… Within the marine soils lies a complex tapestry of fractured shale, sandstone, volcanic dust, and other various constituents. Thus, the wines commonly offer inky concentration, and distinctive Mount Veeder flavors.
