2016 ELLMAN ALEXIS SKYE PINOT NOIR SONOMA COAST

While winemaker Andy Erickson might be best known for crafting Screaming Eagle from 2005-2010, many of his other brands are getting attention too. Just recently the 2015 Mayacamas Cabernet that we offered a month ago ranked #2 in the Wine Spectator, and Andy is the winemaker… He also created Leviathan in 2004 which he built into a recognizable and sought after brand that was recently acquired by the same group that owns Quintessa.  Andy has also had success building a cult-like following for his own label Favia, and he’s produced some fabulous Pinot Noir under that label.  Lucky for us, Andy is also the winemaker for Ellman Family Vineyards, and their 2016 Alexis Skye Pinot Noir comes from two remarkable vineyards, Roberts Road, and Catie’s Corner.

Ellman’s Alexis Skye Pinot stands out for it’s opulent, velvety texture that reminds me a little bit of Kosta Browne.  The largest fruit component is Sangiacomo’s Roberts Road Vineyard, which fans of Saxon BrownNeyers and Ram’s Gate recognize.  The deep, dark fruits from Roberts Road, blend perfectly with the brighter red fruits from Catie’s Corner located in the Russian River Valley.

2016 ELLMAN ALEXIS SKYE PINOT NOIR, SONOMA COAST

Tasting Notes: “The 2016 Ellman Alexis Skye Sonoma Coast Pinot Noir comes from two top-class vineyards in Sonoma and beautifully reflects this outstanding vintage. It’s deep and rich, with loads of black fruits that engulf your palate in a mesmerizing swarm of flavors, balanced by bright red fruits with a savory minerality and earthiness on the mid palate. The ripe and opulent mouth-feel combines beautifully with supple fruit tannins, yet cascades across your palate with amazing grace and elegance, leading to a long, enchanting, satiny finish.” 95 Points, Kevin M. Vogt, Master Sommelier
