2014 MONTHELIE DOUHAIRET PORCHERET LE MEIX BATAILLE MONTHELIE PREMIER CRU

$50.00 $44.00

As hard as it is to find Premier Cru Red Burgundies at an affordable price, finding one made by one of Burgundy’s most renowned winemakers is a lot more difficult… Monthelie Douhairet Porcheret is made by André Porcheret, former winemaker at Domaine Leory from 1988-1993.  Domaine Leroy is one of the greatest wine producers in the world, and some would consider them in the same class as Domaine Romanee Conti.  DRC’s top Grand Cru’s can go for $5000-$30,000/btl depending on vintage.  The area of Monthelie is known for producing some of Burgundy’s most stunning values, and it neighbors Volnay to the North. The top producer in Monthelie is Monthelie Douhairet Porcheret, and at $44, their Le Meix Bataille Premier Cru grabbed my attention and wouldn’t let go.  In fact, after tasting their 2014 Le Meix Bataille, we bought every bottle available.

The wine was created in a style that’s big and round with chewy tannins, powerful structure and notable elegance, and with a few years in the bottle, the 2014 is showing exceptionally well right now.  Arising from a solid vintage in the Cote de Beaune, and one the Wine Spectator details as the third consecutive year of hail, resulted in low yields, yet the best are complex, juicy and age worthy.  This is an exceptional example of the vintage, which produced powerful, complex wines.

2014 MONTHELIE DOUHAIRET PORCHERET LE MEIX BATAILLE MONTHELIE 1ER CRU

Winery Notes: “Meix Bataille is rich and full-bodied with a chewy texture and chiseled structure. It is round and elegant with a delicate tannic backbone. With its bright, clear colour, it reveals aromas of red fruit (cherry, red currant) and black fruit (blackcurrant, blackberry) which evolve towards notes of truffle, leather and spice after a few years in the bottle.  This wine offers the perfect balance between structure and fleshiness…”

Ed’s Notes: “Living in Cali, I humbly have a lot to learn about French Wine. I don’t know much about Burgundy yet… still learning from our partner Master Sommelier. I sipped on this beautiful discovery the other night; it was just exquisite. Earthy, fruity, balanced and very cool to enjoy a bottle from this region. This upcoming year in 2020 I plan on featuring more International Wines to expand upon our relationship, and develop my palate, and perhaps you can also share with me some of your favorites…. let’s keep those glasses full!”
