2014 FROSTWATCH MERLOT “BENNETT VALLEY”

$34.99

Absolutely terrific stuff, and made in a super-concentrated style that I love, the Frostwatch Merlot 2014 could be the poster-child of classic California Merlot.  With a bouquet that makes you do a double sniff, then checking off every box with notes of melted black chocolate, Asian plum, spice box and mulberries, this Merlot is gorgeous now and will age gracefully for 20 years.  Raised from the newly formed Bennett Valley AVA, the 20 year old vines produce fruit of distinguished qualities, and with just 9 barrels produced, there’s not much of this to go around.

Connecting all the dots for 19 months in French oak barrels, this wine is further elevated from more than 15 months developing inside the bottle.  Enormously endowed and packed with mocha-infused chocolates, black cherries, vivid plum and dried flowers which come nestled inside a supportive, round frame. Super Soft, Silky and Smooth… goes down easy, and priced perfectly to enjoy every day. I can see Robert Parker re-visiting with a 95 Point Score.

FROSTWATCH MERLOT 2014 BENNETT VALLEY

From the Winery… Frostwatch Merlot is quickly becoming a benchmark for New World Merlot production. Robert Parker of the Wine Advocate tasted the Sold Out 2013 vintage and scored it at 94 points. He tasted this wine in early 2017 and scored it 90+, (the plus indicating that it had the potential for improving with additional bottle age). We believe it has done just that and recommend that fans of the Merlot give this one a try. The wine is a dense, almost opaque purple/red color. The subtle tannins give the wine structure but do not overpower the wine’s black cherry and plum flavors. The finish is highlighted by a dusting of dried herbs and tea leaves—the hallmark of a good merlot.

From Robert Parker’s The Wine Advocate, “Medium to deep garnet-purple colored, the 2014 Merlot is scented of red and black plums, dried Mediterranean herbs, vanilla and spice box. Full-bodied in the mouth, it has a relatively tannic backbone dominating the fruit and drying out the finish slightly, but there is a lot of expressive fruit to love and it should reward another 3-5 years in bottle.” 90+ Points
