About the only thing richer than Marques de Murrieta’s flagship Castillo Ygay Gran Reserva, is the history of this incredible estate.  The family is linked to the origins of Rioja, and founder Luciano Murrieta was appointed Marquis by King Amadeo of Savoy, due his pioneering style of winemaking which he learned in Bordeaux.  The super-high scoring Castillo Ygay Gran Reserva is one of the Most Popular Wines in the World, and comes from the winery’s highest elevation plantings on a plateau that was planted in the 1940’s and 1950’s.

The 2009 Castillo Ygay is a full-throttle, deep and enchanting blend that’s layered in old-world complexity.  According to the Wine Spectator, 2009 was the best vintage in Rioja since 2005 and produced outstanding wines with beautifully ripe fruit.

Gran Reserva is the top designation in Rioja, where producers use their best grapes and age them for at least 2 years in wood and 3 years in bottle before release.  But in this case, Especial takes it to an even higher level, only being produced in the best vintages, then aged 2 1/2 years in wood and 8 years in the bottle, so this 2009 is their current release.

Marques de Murrieta Castillo Ygay Gran Reserva Especial
Marques de Murrieta Castillo Ygay Gran Reserva Especial 2009

WA96 | From Robert Parker The Wine Advocate, “The grapes fermented and aged separately… It has good depth and concentration, still young and lively with fine tannins and a backbone of freshness that lifts it up. It will develop for a very long time in bottle. This is a great classical Rioja for the long haul… The prices are increasing but so is the quality.“ ROBERT PARKER 96 POINTS

JS95 | From James Suckling, “A special Rioja that’s traditional, but not old-fashioned. Dusty, licorice and spice nose with red fruit. A cool and elegant wine, in spite of the concentration. Long, firm finish. Expands with aeration. From vines planted in 1945. Drink or hold.“ JAMES SUCKLING 95 POINTS

W&S95 | From Wine & Spirits, “… The wine has the richness of the vintage while the fruit holds its freshness, with tart plum and strawberry notes helping to shape all the flavor concentration. It’s a fat wine with attitude, packing dense tannins that last for minutes and need a decade or more to be fully absorbed into the fruit. It’s supple, heady and delicious now, and significantly more complex with several days of air, as it will be with years of age.” WINE & SPIRITS 95 POINTS

WS94 | From Wine Spectator, “Black cherry, plum, clove, cocoa and mineral flavors are rich and harmonious in this polished red. Well-integrated tannins and balsamic acidity keep this balanced. Shows focus and depth, but remains very fresh. Tempranillo and Mazuelo. Drink now through 2024.” WINE SPECTATOR 94 POINTS

94V | From Vinous, “…A highly perfumed, expansive bouquet evokes ripe red and dark berries, cherry liqueur, coconut and cigar box, along with a sexy floral nuance that emerges slowly. Plush and seamless on the palate, offering sweet, deeply concentrated blackberry, cherry-vanilla and mocha flavors that are given spine and lift by a core of juicy acidity. Rich yet energetic in style, displaying superb finishing clarity, even tannins and a lingering spicecake note…” VINOUS 94 POINTS

95D | From Decanter, “…Cassis and blackberry dominate the fruit profile, then black pepper, cloves and even a hint of cinnamon providing a spicy backdrop. The finish is powerful but does not want for elegance. Drinking Window 2020 – 2045“ DECANTER 95 POINTS
